Project: Architecture Heritage Building Analysis

A study of historical building was made through report and analysis attempting to document history of architecture development in Kuala Lumpur. Initially we are tasked to conduct research on Concorde Hotel Kuala Lumpur. Given the limited information available as the hotel is an international business hotel, most of their documents are private and confidential, target was changed to Coliseum Café and Hotel. As this building was built before independence, in the early 1920s, it suits the criteria for exploring architectural language in relation to the development of Western architecture between industrial revolution and post world war 2. Being resourceful at the site, we managed to get chance conducting interview with its manager as well as observing and photographing on site to record findings.

ARCHITECTURE CULTURE AND HISTORY [ARC1323]

HERITAGE
BUILDING

The report was done to engage with the architectural heritage documentation. By having a thorough understanding of the building and its context, we were able to reflect fast facts, contextual condition and overall concept of the building in the report. Also, the building analysis which includes architectural elements and comparative study of similar building type found in another region shows the interpretation of varied factors contributing to development of form of a building.

Phase 2 comprises of analysis highlighting response of western architecture to local contextual conditions, given the influences of diverse culture, climate, technology and material availability.  Climatic response was chosen to study on how do architectural components adapted and transformed into local building structure to best serve the practical and functional need of the local community, thus showing flexibility of architecture style to meet different settings of building environment.
