Project 1: The People & Planet
International Photography Competition 2013
The first Environmental Sustainable Design project was done by having pictorial representation which reflects concern and appreciation towards nature, culture and people, particularly photos telling story about social-justice or environmental issue. In the process of photographing the scene for these specific themes, I was exposed to both positive and negative effects of development and their impacts on the environment, ranging from mother earth itself to its inhabitant, the people. Be it locally or globally, awareness of current environmental circumstances is also raised, which in turn imparted to environmental and ecological sustainable design concept, as this is one of an architect’s obligations towards environment and society.
The burning crimson hidden beneath the smoke keeps unrevealed. Overcrowded brains; Overloaded works. They are the poisons to our mother earth. Gelang Patah, Johor Bahru, Malaysia
How long does it take for sunlight to strike into the crack of dawn? and How long does it take for people to access into the beauty of nature? Nature is mighty; People are greedy. Nature will never be free. Johor Bahru, Malaysia
Distinctions make colours meaningful; Colours make people delightful; People make the world beautiful. Kampung Majidee, Johor Bahru, Malaysia
We were all born superstars, but societies give us each a mask. The mask that used to cover us in the dark. Kampung Majidee, Johor Bahru, Malaysia
In a group of 12, this project has given us opportunity to explore the current environmental circumstances by offering our services to a non-governmental organization which requires our assistance in creating a better environment for them. Again, it strengthened the awareness of role and responsibility as an architect towards environment and society. Not only dealing with the environmental and ecological sustainability of a design, the principle of sustainability was instilled from a new aspect, the sustainability from social perspective. From acknowledging the needs of the community to the design execution, we integrated ourselves fully into the local community for a better understanding towards them to optimize the outcome with the limited resources available. Throughout the whole process, good teamwork was demonstrated with cooperativeness and contribution from all members in the group.
