Project 1: Journey For The 5 Senses

THE
5 SENSES

ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO 3 [ARC2116]

This project is meant to explore spatial typologies and spatial poetic in architecture. Far from the projects done in the previous semester which emphasizing much on the design form, we were given task to express designs which impact on the uses and experiential conditions within an architectural space. The design serves as an experience rather than just an object.

Before generating the design for the walk of 5 senses, my group has chosen Temple of Heaven and Jewish Museum as precedent studies to analyze spatial order and spatial poetics. I am inspired by how the significant spaces shine upon the void in architecture. Says both of the precedent studies, the temple could not be so majestic without its humble surroundings while the dull and plain wall in the museum makes the user turns to his back to have a totally different view looking backwards. Every single part in the architectures is designed with reasons.

For the walk themed ‘journey for the 5 senses’, ‘Devil May Care’ was chosen as poetry to be translated into the walk. The sarcasm of ‘devil’ with ‘care’ brings the concept ‘contrast into the design. As both of the linear and centric designs intended to make user to discover, thus, spaces are kept mysterious, underground and secretive while choices of the user made eventually vary the consequences. Features such as manipulation of lights, materials, texture, human scale informed by the precedent studies are taken into considerations for the design. Much exploration of spaces was made through different spatial types, on the contrary, the linear and the centric spaces.

SITE
ANALYSIS

Project 2a: Discovering the Site and Its Genius Loci
                Jerejak Island, Penang

In Project 2 established adesign concept as a driver for architectural development.  As a starting point, a site analysis was done to interpret and analyze the physical context, social, cultural, historical issues as well as the genius loci within the overall site—Jerajak Island, Penang.

The second phase requires the personal interpretations of the overall character of the site, describing the life and memory of the particular place. The understanding of site was recorded in the form of sketches to generate design concept for the architectural solutions. The concept ‘frame’ was chosen. “There are frames for photo, painting, certificate… Frame means memory. It keeps things which are memorable. However, at Jerejak Island, instead of being isolated by water body from the mainland, in fact, a thick frame formed by marginalization that separates them. Living inside a frame as if one was being watched and guarded. No matter how hard he stresses his eyesight, his view is still trapped within the frame.”

CONCEPT
DEVELOPMENT

Project 3 calls for an architectural response towards the sense of place with a strong engagement and relationship to the site and programmatic requirements. The poetic articulation studied earlier is meant to be translated into the tectonically and poetically expressive space—Visitor Interpretive Centre.

A new concept, ‘transformation’ is adopted and merged with the previous idea into the design to enhance the spirit of the place. “Relating to its site, the quarry waste represents as a new object for this design, not only as a material to be converted, but as an interpretation tool of transformation. As Jerejak Island was once made a health quarantine centre and penal colony, people were sent there to be changed, to be transformed, while outsiders tend to marginalized them. However, these two groups were used to be as one. Thus, blending of two different structures as a whole is set as the design concept, representing the transformation of fragility into solidity.” The fusion of solid and void implied to the design where the turning of enclosed ramp indirectly create an empty space in the centre, virtually creating a frame in the centre that gives different experience when looking towards the frame
