BUILDING TECHNOLOGY 2 [ARC3612/3614]

Working Drawings are an integral part of the construction industry and the architect’s chief means of communication with the various levels of the authorities, clients and consultants. A comprehensiveknowledge of the format and conventions of working drawings, as well as an overall awareness of its importance in practice is crucial.

Project 2: Working Drawing
              Construction/Technical Drawing

Technical drawing is the bridge between building design and physical building form. While design represents an expression of the desired solution, technical drawings control the eventual physical outcome of that expression. To achieve this, all aspects of technical knowledge, from structural design, material choice, construction detailing to adherence to by-laws and safety and health requirements and building services for user comfort and well-being, should be cohesively integrated in the final design of the Architectural Design Project.

OBJECTIVE

• To develop an awareness of the role of technical drawings through the production of full set floor plans, wall sections and detailing of the students’ final design projects

• To develop an understanding of technical drawing conventions and formats through application

• To develop an awareness of the general nature, principles and procedures of law and legislation, including the Uniform Building By-laws (UBBL) and local fire regulations

• To develop an awareness of construction details consistent with design and performance
