Stage 1: Precedent Study A

NATURE

ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO 4 [ARC2126]

RAINFOREST RESORT

The first stage is to seek and investigate existing knowledge on the similar scheme and sustainable architecture. The main aim is to analyse architectural precedents for,

- spacial typology,

- spatial programming and,

- poetic relationship between the built and natural
   setting.

The site location is within the area of the Malaysian Nature Society Environmental Interpretive Centre in Sepang, Selangor, and located approximately 75-minute drive from Kuala Lumpur. The EIC is dominated by landscape of mangrove and rivers. It also acts as a sanctuary to many species of flora and fauna such as endangered smooth otter.

The second phase requires the personal interpretations of the overall character of the site, identifying and analysing environmental features as well asn social need of the particular site as basis for the architectural design proposal.

Stage 2: Discovering the Environemnt and Social Needs for Contextual architecture

SITE
ANALYSIS

This project calls for a design of a simple public building with some complexity that includes the complexity of site topography and vegetation, socio-cultural events, and variety of strategies for sustainable design. Concept is developed based on the site analysis and the communal needs. It explores design solutions that harness environmental qualities and conditions for human and environment sustainability. Design solutions are meant to reduce environmental impact utilising clustered spatial typology and passive design approach, merging harmoniously with nature and the site, as well as provide the best experiences for the users.

The main intention designing a Nature Appreciation Centre at Sepang is to tie human and nature relationship to instil knowledge of mangrove conservation. With the core concept “Transition”, it realized the need for people to escape from urban life into natural atmosphere; creating a space connecting the two contrasting elements—artificial and natural. This idea is applied by slowing unwrapping the enclosure of space as well as user’s vision. The sense of solidity and restraint from the building’s external appearance gradually changed into an open and breathing building which the building enables users closer to the surrounding and communicating with the nature. In accordance with the sustainable planning approach, the water purification process which utilizing the building itself not only profits the environment, but provides view for users as an appreciation to nature.
