SELF-EXPRESSION
THROUGH OBJECT

ARCHITECTURE DESIGN STUDIO 1 [ARC1116]

This ice-breaking design project introduces the principles and methods in design thinking through the design of an object of mystery. In orders and variants of the three: design principles, techniques and building blocks,  I was required to reproduce and emphasize the idea of an expression in 3-dimension which addresses ideas of form and function through the use of simple object. Apart from exploring the three rules, I was also exposed in experimenting with materials, joints, surfaces and form in architectural design.

Various forms of models are generated solely with brown board as it works well with the folded strips. Different methods range from changing the size, thickness, height and width of the strips in manipulating the flow of wavy lines are used in creating rhythmic models.

Through this project, I learnt to generate design through a process-driven method as well as produce model in order to communicate design in a fun way.

No longer designing an object, criteria such as human dimension and scale as well as the user experience are to be included as part of considerations in forming a space for people to inhabit and use. The main aim is to explore the relationships between human body and design. In a group of 5, we follow the fixed and constant parameter for the material used, the brown board, to exercise on rhythm, slotting and strips as the design principle, technique and building block respectively. All the experimental models made are focusing on response to ergonomics, proxemics, user type and physicality. One of the biggest problems encountered is the way to fix and remain desirable shape of each strip as no addhesive is allowed to be used in modelling.

Phase 2 consists of constructing a large-scale model at 1:1 (3m x 3m) which aims to develop an understanding of materrial and structure. Combining into bigger group of fifteen, we are to design and construct based on the design schemes proposed by other group -- combination of repetition, slotting and strips.

Corrugated cardboard is chosen as the major material by considering its highly recyclable and flexible properties. Its structural stability is overcome by using satay stick slotted into the corugated medium at every joining parts to act as reinforcement for the whole construction. This exercise enable us to manage both design and construction process, as it is not as easy as one might thinks to translate the design into a practical, compact and transportable installation. The limitations that demand us to rethink the scale, site, material and function of the design are made into consideration during the procedure of construction.
