Project 1: Human Perception of Comfort Level

COMFORT
BUILDING SCIENCE 1 [ARC2412]
In this project, we are introduced to the term ‘thermal comfort’ in relation to people and building design by relating to the bioclimatic chart. Task is given to write a report on the monitored temperatures, looking at the effects of solar radiation, thermal mass, insulation and ventilation. The experiment was carried out in one of the unit at Sunway Court Apartment, Petaling Jaya. As the results collected states that the temperature is not within the comfort range, we analyzed the factors that affect the thermal environment in both natural and man-made aspects. Also, I’ve learnt that different material (K-value, u-value, r-value)had different effect on heat gain or thermal environment in a given space.

This project aimed to show understanding of thermal comfort in the final studio design. Estimating heat gain of the design space using ecotect analysis and heat gain calculation, we are required to provide passive solutions for the design to address an aesthetically and thermally comfort space. With MS1525 and UBBL are the guidelines, I’ve come to understand and judge the limits of acceptable and desirable conditions as well as recommend designs that control the effects of sun on the thermal performance of buildings by using shading devices. Overall, the solutions for my design are that heavily relying on the landscape itself by manipulating the use of natural lighting, ventilation and the locally found materials, to address the basic design strategies.
